OTHER STUFF

Note: The opinions expressed herein are solely those of the author. Any resemblance to real librarians (living or dead, or somewhere in between) or real libraries, may be a coincidence - but probably not.

Biblia, the Warrior Librarian, was created by A.B.Credaro. The practice of Warrior Librarianship is common, and therefore quite possibly in the public domain. As such, it is likely to be exempt from any copyright restrictions. However, this does not limit Warrior Librarian Weekly, its agents, employees, heirs, spouses, family pets, or others connected with the zine, from trying to make an easy buck from its use.

Universal permission is granted to any website to create a link to any page on this site. Notification of such links is appreciated, but not mandatory.

INTERNET STANDARDS
Satirical online library journal honored with award

Website Award trophy Warrior Librarian was awarded the Cash Fever "Top Ten Websites for March 2005" graphic of a trophy, featuring Cash Fever's advertising. Bob McDaniels, Webmaster for Cash Fever, stated in an email that the Warrior Librarian website "is highly creative, fast-loading, very original, has appeal for your target audience and is certainly deserving of our award."

Editor and webmaster of Warrior Librarian, A. B. Credaro, had found the Cash Fever award site during a search for a trophy graphic that would have been used in a completely nefarious manner, and submitted an online application for the Cash Fever award.

McDaniels closed his award notification with "thanks for helping us to find and award the Top Sites on the Internet" ....

PUBLISHER NEWS
Immediacy found to be relative

Library Media Connection Linworth Publishing recently announced that it had added two new acquisitions editors to its book development team. The publisher of professional development resources for K-12 educators, was "pleased to announce the addition of Cynthia Anderson and Gary Hartzell" to their staff".

The press release was headed with the information For Immediate Release. Unfortunately, due to a backlog of ironing at Warrior Librarian Central, combined with the completely outrageous expectation that some actual work be completed at the Warrior Librarian's day job, plus the need to find at least a few hours to sleep at least once every 24 hours (and lack of appropriate facilities for same at the Day Job Worksite), it was not possible to release Linworth's news 'immediately' in terms of the Gregorian amendments to the Julian Calendar and subsequent revisions.

However, using glacial speed as a frame of reference, the release was pretty swift. But in considering Geological Time this news has been released virtually instantaneously. Or to put it in terms of Library Budget Reform, it's just about a miracle that it happened at all ...

CENSORSHIP
Left hand vs right hand

Rainbow Cubbyhouse:Paperback,12 pages, ISBN: 0958129029 Two Australian children's books, The Rainbow Cubby House and Koalas on Parade, have come under fire in the state of NSW. Targeted at Year 1 and 2 emergent readers, they cover the theme of gay marriage.

The NSW Attorney-General's Department provided $33,000 over two years from its $1.9 million annual crime prevention budget to develop and publish the two books, as part of the State Government's anti-homophobic behavior strategy. The books also have accompanying teachers' notes "developed with the assistance of the state's Department of Education", and were launched at a party hosted by the Teachers' Federation and the NSW Anti-Homophobia Interagency. However, the books are now the subject of a state investigation.

According to a report published by the Daily Telegraph, Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt said the books are not part of the official school syllabus and it was up to the school and parents whether they wanted them used in the classrooms ...

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
What's the point?

Reuters reports that Craig Crosbie, a 24 year old Scottish factory worker had been named the world's fastest text-messenger. Cosbie took 48 seconds to type the required 160-character message.

This amazing feat of information dissemination may have far-reaching implications for the Libraryscape, despite the fact that the actual value of the information transmitted may have a restricted audience.

There may be a small number of travelling scientists who might be interested in knowing "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human". Although we guess people got bored reading about quick brown foxes jumping over lazy dogs ...

LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
No huge secret

Letter Blocks A report on Literacy and Numeracy in Disadvantaged Schools, based on an assessment of standards in 12 disadvantaged schools in Dublin, Limerick and Cork in March 2004 revealed that on average, 25 per cent of students in the schools assessed suffered severe literacy difficulties. In the schools most seriously hit, up to 50 per cent of pupils had severe literacy problems.

According to the Irish Times, the report is confidential, which is probably why there are no news stories about it. Not. ...

LIBRARY ZEITGEIST
Application of research skills

Rita Braver CBS coverage of Peeps quite rightly proclaims 'research' as fundamental to news reportage. It is therefore somewhat ironic that their 'discussion' of the infamous Peeps Research from Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. was compiled using the state-of-the-art Verbatim Research directly from the MU Peeps page.

Well done, reporter Rita Braver for being able to identify the people responsible, from the 18pt bold font heading at the top of the web page ....

WLW ORIGINAL LIBRARY HUMOR

MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Laugh yourself comatose

WLW Reader laughing Research has shown that the average librarian will take 10 to 15 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 110+ original library humor items (all written by Biblia, and not available anywhere else on the 'net) in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read.

However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...

MEDIA STORY OF THE WEEK

Headlines While the Seattle Times notes "along with the travel mug and the laptop, fast becoming Seattle's latest cultural icon is the library card."

Detailing the increase in the number of library cards issued, and the reaction of patrons to new and refurbished libraries, the article also quotes Sam Miller, project director on the downtown library for Seattle's LMN. Miller stated that " ... one of the biggest challenges was designing the floors so that library materials wouldn't eventually overwhelm the people using the library ... one of our main goals was to constrain that growth so books would not infringe on the public spaces".

And the whole purpose of a library would be? ...

CORPORATE HOME LIBRARY

Pile of books Weeding for fun and profit

Warrior Librarian, its editorial staff, associates, future heirs and assorted relatives and pets, would like to apologize for the misleading heading. Weeding the home collection is not fun, nor is it profitable.

Nevertheless, it is just as necessary as culling obsolete or unused resources in any other type of library. For a start, there is the space issue - any living collection needs room for recent acquisitions. Then there is the health issue; old paper stock is a breeding ground for many types of pathogens.

Not to mention materials damaged beyond repair. Although red wine is not a common hazard to books beyond the home ...
