CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
Warrior Librarian was framed
Job security was thrown into chaos for many librarians recently, when the Warrior Librarian revealed that framing was becoming routine in almost all professions, both inside and beyond the workplace.
A local photographic studio, which can't be identified under strict privacy laws, has been identified as being typical of these widespread practices.
Technology experts claim that the resurgence of photography as a hobby is almost certainly due to the falling prices of digital equipment and the increase in do-it-yourself printing kiosks in shopping malls, and possibly some of the more innovative libraries.
At the time of going to press, the decision was still being made as to whether to go for a plain wooden frame, or something perhaps with a faux-gold inlay pattern ...

CATCH-22
Young readers denied freedom of choice; older readers spurned
Hundreds of thousands of elementary aged children are increasingly finding that they are being forced into wearing stupid outfits for family outings, especially where fancy dress is required.
A recent study by the fledgling Donnybrook University Medical School's division of Library Services and Barbeque Staffing has found that by the time older readers and young adults find themselves in similar situations, they're refusing to comply with parental demands.
The library staff is currently discussing the practicality of enforcing a dress code for their library patrons where the wearing of anything not having parental approval will not be allowed into the building. A spokesperson said that it was a matter of weighing up the relative merits of aesthetics over usage statistics ...

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Fashion writer identified as having written fashion books
Ex-pat Briton Marion Hume, now apparently resident in Australia, has launched yet another book about the fashion industry.
The launch of her latest book The Fashion Pack sent out ripples amongst the fashion community, where she is known to quite a few people who also write fashion books.
Stan Watters, who achieved almost instant fame as the sailor who spent 14 hours in the sea wearing only boxer shorts after he fell overboard from an oil tanker, had no comment to make on Hume, her book, or the fashion industry in general ....

ENDS AND MEANS
Dept. of Ed. axes Virtual Reference Desk funding
The VRD project will end on June 30, 2005, writes coordinator of the VRD project Blythe Bennett, following the US Department of Education's major budget cuts.
The AskA service will be funded temporarily by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the Digital Reference Education Initiative (DREI) project. This project was started under VRD several years ago and was then funded by IMLS as "advancing general reference practice and library education".
However, the annual conference will still be held in San Francisco as planned, but is doubtful for 2006 ...

LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
Telco to address literacy crisis
In yet another of the online ironies, Steven Donahue - professor and developer of innovative writing enhancement technology - has announced the release of revolutionary Telephone Learning Software that will supposedly "help solve the literacy crisis in American classrooms and promises to truly Leave No Child Behind. The phone learning system is capable of processing student essays by telephone and returning instant holistic scores."
Professor Donahue declared "There has got to be a better way to teach aspiring English learners" ...

| WLW ORIGINAL LIBRARY HUMOR |
MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Laugh yourself comatose
Research has shown that the average librarian will take 10 to 15 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 110+ original library humor items (all written by Biblia, and not available anywhere else on the 'net) in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read.
However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...

Well, it seems very few of the so-called 'fans' of Warrior Librarian Weekly even bothered to visit Biblia's wish list over at Amazon; for the first time ever she didn't get one birthday present. The belief here at Warrior Librarian Central is that perhaps not enough people were informed about this important event on the literary calendar.
Therefore, plans are already in place to ensure that in the months leading up to next year's big event, the message is made even more forcefully. Or perhaps with a little less subtlety.
By the way, the Warrior Librarian would like to thank both the people who bothered to at least drop her a birthday email ...

Despite the wide range of most excellent websites that are available, this week's award goes to The Best Page in the Universe.
Educational theorists say that self-review is often the most critical - and therefore the most accurate assessment. And this guy has rated his own site very, very highly.
Added to which, we have great empathy with the author's statement "This page is about me and why everything I like is great. If you disagree with anything you find on this page, you are wrong" ...

The real world is no longer describable inside terms of naturalistic fiction. It’s become too big, ugly, strange, distorted, weird.

The holidays (and the big birthday) now being over, it's been a return to the incredibly exciting and stimulating activities associated with metadata tagging.
With the last of the birthday cake now eaten, and something that might be loosely called an exercise program (involving getting out of bed 5/7 @ 6am and going into the office - eventually) now in place, weight to the equivalent of at least one small piece of chocolate has more than probably been shed.
Which is pretty lucky, considering that the upcoming conference (CPTLA 2005) features a 'fancy dress' conference dinner; now that there is an Official Warrior Librarian costume (not yet available for public viewing; and no, it's not the one pictured in this week's edition of WLW) ...
