LIBRARY PROMOTION:
THE POPUP CAMPAIGN

Website advertising that uses popups, popunders, popthroughs and popouts is irritating, annoying, frustrating, and intrusive ... but very successful (otherwise they wouldn't do it). Maybe it's time that these techniques were used for library promotion?

The Pop-up: When one librarian is attending to a patron at the circulation desk, a second librarian pops up from behind the counter. Smiling brightly and wearing a flashing light on the head, Librarian 2 announces loudly in the patron's face that the patron has been selected for a special prize. The patron is then handed a voucher that allows them to borrow an extra 2 books on their next visit to the library, if they bring a friend with them.

The Pop-under: As a patron lifts a book from a shelf, a spring-loaded frame with a photograph of one of the librarians pops up from under the book. Clever captioning, such as "have you spoken to your librarian today?" would be written in fluorescent pen across the picture.

The Pop-through: Librarians accost patrons as they walk between stacks, wearing irridescent lycra and loudly announcing that the patron can "Eat at Joe's" or another library sponsor's establishment. This will also increase library revenue.

The Pop-out: As patrons run screaming from the library, more librarians are waiting outside the building. By waving large signs promoting gambling - "Remember to bring your book back on time, or we spin the wheel to determine your fine" - your library visitors are sure to remember their borrowing experience.
