PUBLIC SUPPORT
Library Riots

Around the nation, irate citizens are voicing their opinion on the lack of funding for libraries, and demanding immediate action.

 One person lobbying?
Angry crowds protest against library budget cuts

There has been a flood of letter to a newspaper, and an angry call to talk-back radio. Inside sources believe that there may even be plans to produce a leaflet.

At this stage, riot police are apparently on stand-by, not attending the protest rallies in what is believed to possibly be an effort to reduce media attention.

A spokesperson for the Wangaratta Police Department, Vernon Kwriskzi, stated that he was prepared to arrest anyone that violated city ordinances for Unlawful Assembly, although he hadn't actually heard anything about the Library Protests.

At this time, there does not appear to be any federal investigation to identify the leaders of this protest movement, nor into the claims of insufficient library budgets ...

READING PROMOTION
Library doubles figures

2 students reading
Students at Duffield, VA City Library

Duffield, VA: Following intense work by library staff, the community seems to have been convinced that the Internet doesn't hold all the answers for students with research papers.

The city's Chief Librarian, who asked to remain anonymous, stated that the advertising in the local newspaper, together with celebrity appearances and 'open house' events had used up the entire budget for the next three years, "but, by golly, we got those kids back in there reading".

Unfortunately, staff have had to be slashed back to one part-timer, and there is now no aquisitions budget. The Library Board has denied that the return to using hard copy resources was in any way related to the fact that as the library now can't afford electricity, it can't run any computers.

Although the reading promotion campaign consumed most of the library's budget, the reading room is now catering to record numbers of users, in fact twice that recorded for the same period last year, up from one to two ...

AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
Zeitgeist or Bust?

According to a recent CNN report, Michael Jackson "delivered millions of viewers to ABC, NBC and Fox during the February ratings sweeps".

 Celebrity Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson

There are now threats of another two hour special on Fox. But this time at least we can be prepared. The April 24 show will provide "unprecedented access to thousands of hours of never-before-seen footage revealing his real life, family and friends," the network said.

Water Boards are expressing concern that millions of people may decide that they'd rather wash their hair on that night. However, this forwarning allows librarians (with appropriate copyright concessions) time for considered decision making. Will they either rifle through old video tapes to see what they want to tape over, or join the general population by deciding to do something not related to the continuing Michael Mania ...

LIBRARIAN PROFILE OF THE WEEK
Julie Niederhauser

The vast majority of the population has never heard of Julie Niederhauser, Reference Librarian at Alaska's Kenai Community Library.

Julie Niederhauser, librarian
Julie Niederhauser

Maybe it's because they don't live in Alaska. Possibly they've never even heard of Kenai? When was the last time you even thought about Alaska (unless you live there, of course). Have you ever sought out Alaskan pen pals, or sent home-knitted socks and scarves to the Alaskan Red Cross?

Concerned readers will be wondering what this has to do with Julie Niederhauser, and rightly so. Julie is in charge of inter-library loans and the Reference Collection, and works as a full-time assistant at Alaska's Kenai Community Library. But is that the end of the "Julie Niederhauser Story"?

What are the hopes and dreams of Julie Neiderhauser? What professional relationship does she have with her library manager, and how does her commitment to excellence in her library work impact on her family life? Was the website she constructed for the Kenai Community Library a labor of love, or part of her job description?

Maybe you don't even care about Julie, Kenai, or even Alaska. If so, perhaps you should ask yourself "am I really an informed citizen" ...

MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Laugh yourself comatose.
Research has shown that the average librarian will take 5-10 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 90+ original library humor items in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read. However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version is still in beta ....

[According to the main charactor in Ian Bone's book, "The Song of an The Innocent Bystander"] you can either do good, or be good. By 'being good', one would conform to expectations, and not make any waves, rock the boat, or get seasick at the wrong time. That only leaves the other option, as it is self-evident that you can't do both ...

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

The most important thing I have to say to you today is that hair matters. This is a life lesson my family did not teach me [and] Wellesley and Yale Law School failed to instil: Your hair will send significant messages to those around you. What hopes and dreams you have for the world - but more, what hopes and dreams you have for your hair. Pay attention to your hair, because everyone else will.
