Library Hotel vs OCLC Followers of Libraries in Real Life will be happy to know that New York's Library Hotel has now settled the dispute with OCLC over their use of the Dewey Decimal Classification system for numbering their hotel rooms. Tina Gunter of Biola University Library reports on a brief article (about 1.25 column inches, in the Nation Digest on inside of front page) in Wednesday's paper, which stated that the hotel "agreed to acknowledge in its advertising OCLC's rights to DDC, and to make a donation of an undisclosed amount to a nonprofit organization which promotes reading among children". At this time, there is no news on the possibility that smaller hotels might be considering the use of Abridged Dewey ... ... There is no more to read >> Technology proven book-dependent Whilst many librarians fear (and with justification) that their book budgets are being slashed in favor of fund diversion for hardware, a small but dedicated group of school librarians have produced indisputable photographic proof that society will always need books. In the western suburbs of Sydney, at the combined Blacktown-Mt Druitt-Penrith Teacher Librarian Network Professional Development afternoon, librarians were able to solve the problem that had stymied the tekkies. Many centuries of information science have proven that books are not only useful for reading ... ... As it's coming to the end of the year, we thought some of our WLW readers might be interested in a summary of conference proceedings for the year to date. The DoIS (Documents in Information Science) website has an extensive listing in almost alphabetical order. Thousands of them. On just about every library and information-related topic you can think of. And in languages you won't even recognize. Given that we all have too much reading to do, rather than point you to any specific papers - and we keep in mind that we have no idea what your areas of interest are (fercryinoutloud, we aren't even sure what we are interested in) - we leave you to 'unpack' the information at your leisure ... ... MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Research has shown that the average librarian will take 5-10 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 90+ original library humor items in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read. However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...
