Any resemblance to real librarians (living or dead, or somewhere in between) or real libraries, may be a coincidence - but probably not. Biblia, the Warrior Librarian, was created by A.B.Credaro. However, this does not limit Warrior Librarian Weekly, its agents, employees, heirs, spouses, family pets, or others connected with the zine, from trying to make an easy buck from its use. Author signs books for 3 days Yet again shaking all conventions for author signing, the Warrior Librarian made herself available for autographing her book - for three days. Completely overwhelmed by the 6 people who presented their purchased copy for signing over the 72 hour period, the Warrior Librarian stated that her patronage of "other facilities" in the hotel may have made it a little difficult to locate her at times. However, speaking in her own defence, she continued by adding that she had complete faith in librarians' abilities in locating resources any where, any time, and that those who couldn't locate her weren't really trying. Or got lost or something .... "Nebraska Man" rocks library world In a world seemingly bereft of loyalty and free time, it's heartwarming to discover that people are willing to drive for 9 hours across three states to attend a school library conference. Particularly when the individual concerned is a retired dentist. Sure, he sits on a public library board, and is married to a librarian, but still ... ... There is no more to read >> People in Publishing Sharon Coatney, the 1998-1999 President of the American Association of School Librarians, has now resigned from her library position to become a full-time (virtual) editor for Greenwood Publishing. Interestingly, she hadn't met one of her "authors" in a real-time, face-to-face situation until more than 18 months after the successful submission of a manuscript. In fact, it was more than 6 months after the book's publication. All correspondence had been completed by email. Except for a CD of graphics, which was snail-mailed. And some contracts, which also went via US mail. OK, and some other stuff that couldn't be emailed or FTP'd. Alright, already! Mostly emailed. Happy now? Meeting the author in an "informal setting", Ms Coatney stated that she was "delighted" to meet the author in person. Completely unfazed by the author's spilling a drink over a pile of books and a laptop computer, Sharon laughed the incident off. As one might well do, as it wasn't her laptop ... ... When I was your age, we didn't go gallivantin' around the world, doing library conferences 'n' such. Let alone drinkin' in bars with people you'd only just met, even if they was librarians. Sheesh! Now you just go and git up to your room, and stay there until I's a-callin' yer. And don't give me none of yer lip about how yers 48 years old 'n' married with 3 half-grown kids of yer own ... ... MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Research has shown that the average librarian will take 5-10 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 90+ original library humor items in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read. However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ... MOST POPULAR BIBLIA PAGES TO DATE:
The Fargo Forum may appear to have ommitted coverage of Biblia's appearance at the MEMO conference. However, the possibility of a special lift-out feature in a future edition has not been completely discounted. Yet. Give it a few weeks. Or months ... Biblia's next conference appearance is scheduled on June 29, 2004 for the School Library Association of Queensland. Members and friends of MEMO can click here for the report on the Fargo conference. Recently discovered was the fact that both the Warrior Librarian and this website have been included in the course material for the Information Literacy e-course IST 4117 run by the School Information Cataloguing Service through Edith Cowan University ... The math teaching portal, Geometry Net still includes the paper by A.B. Credaro on The Instructional Use of Children's Literature. Why they chose this one over Biblia's Maths Fiction Titles is beyond us ... Meanwhile over at Amazon.com, the current sales rating for Biblia's Guide has held its previous sales ranking at 526,239. Information on the website as at last time we looked was that they only had one left in stock, but more were on the way. Thanks to Jeff who wrote to say that WLW is weird, and took over 5 kb to say it. But that was more due to the graphics than any actual text content .... ... There is no more to read >>
During Biblia's study tour of US school libraries, the Warrior Librarian may well have devised a scheme that will revolutionize both staffing and funding of those invaluable - but undervalued - institutions. On hearing about the funding shortfalls and predictions resulting from the "greying" of LMS professionals, then further investigation of the US economy, Biblia is in the process of preparing a recommendation that the expenditure on security and libraries for ex-presidents be amended. By retraining ex-presidents as school librarians, and posting them to schools, their presidential libraries can be incorporated into the school library collections (with necessary modifications). The security staff that have been assigned to the ex-presidents can expand their duties to include yard duty and shelving. Incidently, this would also help with the prompt return of overdue books ... ... There is no more to read >> |
International news is dominated by Schwarzenegger's electoral victory. Californian librarians are still waiting for the new governer's statement on library funding ... Hobart (Australia) Mercury covered the Island Journeysconference. The report notes the presence of internationally acclaimed experts, who discussed the educational benefits of professional staffing and adequate funding of libraries. At the time of writing, there doesn't appear to have been a particularly noticable attendence of policy and funding-type politicians at the conference ... ZDnet UK reports that the FIPR, the Campaign for Digital Rights, the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance, and other groups have argued for limitations on the EUCD that protect citizens ... PC Magazine has covered the library filtering issue. The story is datelined (on October 8) as October 28 ... Limpopo, Africa is to launch 6 mobile libraries. Spokesperson for the department of sports, arts and culture Hloki Sebola told BuaNews that the units are "set to meet the needs of communities in promoting the love for reading and education, access to information and other social aspects". Maybe they could share this policy with some of our Western politicians ... The Times of Malta cites disappointment that public libraries were excluded from recent conferences on both life-long learning and literacy .... The good news from Barbados is that the Minister of Education (in association with Coca Cola) will establish libraries in every school. The bad news is that they are doing this to "help solve overcrowding and indisciplined acts carried out by students who use the Public Library" ... There is no more >>
